IntelliJ configuration notes on using HugePages
Java has supported Linux Hugepages for a while, but it is not on by default. I like to squeeze the most performance out of my IDE so I turned it on. And here are the settings I used for Intellij now: > cat idea64.vmoptions -XX:+UseLargePages -XX:LargePageSizeInBytes=2m -Xms256m -Xmx768m -server -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=15 -ea -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djsse.enableSNIExtension=false…

Pogoplug now running hostapd
I was not anticipating it not being able to reach channel 11, so I set it to channel 1. Also, it cannot do 802.11n, so I set it to 802.11g. My cell phone seems to be able to use it. Also, for some reason, my pogoplug syncs up to the same switch better than my…

Time Machine on a network drive
Helping a friend setup time machine backups to his new NAS device. Reasonable howto so far. Time Machine on a network drive. Unfortunately, when you see some of the examples of how to get ‘computer name’ and ‘drive name,’ you might not get familysomething.local as your hostname, it might be ‘familysomething.routerbrand.com.’ Why familysomething would gain…

Raw ZVOL access in ZFS on Linux not an option for VirtualBox?
I have gotten about as far as I can go…I can boot a Fedora netinstall cd, and I can attempt to fdisk /dev/sda, but this device will not open in fdisk. This might be consistent with no “rdsk” device in the dev tree. Funny though, I can fdisk /dev/zd0, and it lists partitions. Could this…

Converting Virtualbox disk to ZFS volumes
I am trying to create zvol backed virtualbox guests using ZFS on Linux. Hopefully this is not too ambitious. Find size of original .VDI disk image: vboxmanage showhdinfo Fedora19.vdi Pass that file size into zfs create: zfs create -V40960M tank/VMs/Fedora19 Convert .vdi file to raw, best if you can do this from one hd to…

Molex, You Suck
When I was reassembling the drive cages in Beavertail, it was definitely plain that one set was more damaged than the adjacent set. The only two obvious flaws were heat, and grounding. I had been monitoring the heat off and on, and the drives never even got higher than 90F, and they are laptop drives,…

Replacing a Four Drives at Once
I would not have considered this tactic possible, but then I’ve often come from small raid setups or hardware raid setups that are unlikely to want to replace multiple disks at a time. Replacing four at a time!

Two drives fail at once? Oh yeah…
Just as I thot I was all cool for having a sixteen drive NAS, today’s opening of it and trying a new network card (did not fit) left me with bad news on the next powerup. > dmesg | grep ata | grep error: [ 23.223221] ata13.00: error: { ABRT } [ 23.234448] ata13.00: error:…

I have to go to Florida to get to Ferndale
From Bellingham, there is there really no peering point in Qwest’s backbone to Comcast? It seems preposterous that I takes me 102ms to ping 11 miles. I wish I could brag about biking that fast. But at least I do not have to bike to Florida to get to Ferndale: traceroute to firewall.candelatech.com (70.89.124.249), 30…

Net Neutrality | Electronic Frontier Foundation
FTA: The FCC has a poor track record of getting net neutrality right. In January 2014, a federal court rejected the bulk of the FCC’s 2010 Open Internet order. The rules that the court threw out, however, were deeply flawed. Protecting net neutrality is a hard problem, with no easy solutions. … [W]e are asking…
