  • 2010-05-16 Ten Dumb Things (TechRepublic)

This list of ten IT no-nos is handy wisdom. Honestly, these things happen to all us IT people, and I’ve certainly learned some lessons here.

  • Fixed my rear shifter cable on the school playground

This morning before I rolled downtown to the farmers market, I had a hard time adjusting the rear derailer. Closer inspection revealed that my barrel adjuster was turned all the way out and I wasnt going to get any more tension on it. The cable also appeared to be suffering some buildup of grime around…

  • Friday ride with Rod

On my way home from work, I came upon a cyclist that appeared to be just recovering from some kind of interruption. I rode along side him for a while and we talked most of the way south on Northwest. Rod is 73, he began cycling three years ago. He’d done two of the 50…

  • 2010-05-15 Low Maintenance and Bicycle Transmission

Most bicycles have an “exo” gear system, exposed to the air that really catches a lot of grime and needs a lot of cleaning and maintenance if you ride a lot and take it seriously. The alternative is a non-derailler transmission, a geared hub. This would be applicable to a single-speed bicycle, or even a…

  • What Does Not Being Advertised To Look Like? (TWiG ep 42 with Doc Searls)

I’ve been reading Doc Searles in Linux Journal for a decade, and his notion of how regular people need to act in control of their attention, and sell it to vendors, and reward vendors with business on the merit of their service–this is acute brilliance. So hearing Jeff Jarvis and Doc together produces an *impressive*…

  • (Technometria) Facebook, Google, Vendors and Privacy

A very detailed episode presents a rich argument for the positive side of Facebook’s Graph and Open Graph apis, and guest Jesse Stay argues that the popularity of FB will drive RFDa style semantic tagging of web sites at a more accelerated rate than either Google or Yahoo could have. This discussion doesn’t walk the…

  • People Are Happier with Pets than Computers

This thread on biking with pets makes me happy. Much happier than dealing with flaming bits of computer…you can tell it’s been a ruff night. Ruff! Ruff!

  • 400 lbs bananas on a cargo bike

Really, these stunts need to be done. People are not normally convinced that you can even take so much as a briefcase on a bicycle–people probably think they can carry more using a skateboard than a bicycle because they don’t need their hands to steer a skateboard, right?
